Pongau

The district of Pongau borders the provinces of Carinthia, Styria and Upper Austria and is traversed by the impressive Salzach Valley. Surrounded by the mountain ranges of the Hochkönig (2,941 m) and the Hohe Tauern (3,798 m), the region impresses visitors with the dreamlike and romantic atmosphere of its quaint villages and delights alpine winter sports fans with its excellent ski resorts. The latter can see for themselves why St. Johann has such a first-class reputation as one of the most important entry points to the huge "Ski amadé" ski world. A highlight of the massive mountain world is the legendary "Liechtenstein Gorge". Also well worth seeing is the Hohe Tauern National Park in the south of the region – one of the most beautiful natural worlds in Europe.
