Ski holidays Gais-Uttenheim – A holiday amongst picturesque castle ruins and the sunny Plan de Corones (Kronplatz)!
Villa Ottone
The idyllic hamlet of Uttenheim, part of the municipality of Gais in South Tyrol, lies at an altitude of 840 metres and is regarded as the gateway to the Tauferer Ahrntal valley. Picturesquely nestled within the landscape of the Zillertal Alps, just under 1,100 people call this place home. They have every reason to be proud of it, not least because the striking 11th-century ruins of Uttenheim Castle are perched on a steep rocky ridge above the village. Another cultural highlight in Gais-Uttenheim is the parish church of St Margaret, which houses the works of the famous ‘Master of Uttenheim’. He was one of the most significant artists of the 15th century. However, the village is not just for culture vultures, but also for nature lovers, who can go for walks here along the banks of the River Ahr and in the adjacent Ahrauen nature reserve. Historic architecture, charming cafés and, in winter, a Christmas market as well as great shopping opportunities also await in Brunico (Bruneck), just 8.5 km away. When it comes to winter sports, the Gais-Uttenheim area offers not only winter walking, tobogganing and cross-country skiing, but of course also skiing in the Plan de Corones (Kronplatz) ski area (125 kilometres of piste at altitudes of up to 2,275 metres).
Plan de Corones
At the foot of the Plan de Corones (2,275 m), in the centre of the picturesque Val Pusteria, are 14 diverse and attractive South Tyrolean villages. Modern gondolas start from various stations and speed up to the peak, from which imposing 360-degree views unfold. Diverse sporting events take place here on a regular basis, e.g. the Val Pusteria ski marathons including the Valle di Casies run, the biggest sporting event in South Tyrol. 121 kilometres of piste, approx. 31 modern lifts, a half-pipe, as well as ample recreational and sporting opportunities and lively après ski ensure a good deal off piste! This ski area is also great for families, thanks to numerous facilities such as the "Croniworld".Getting to Villa Ottone
