Verbier Ski area

The Verbier ski area is part of Switzerland’s largest ski region, the 4 Vallées. The ‘Verbier sector’ itself comprises 192 kilometres of varied and very beginner-friendly pistes. These are divided into 40 per cent blue, 40 per cent red and 20 per cent black descents, including the Chassoure descent. All descents are served by 33 state-of-the-art lift systems and cable cars.

And because Verbier is renowned far beyond Switzerland’s borders as a true deep powder snow mecca, the seven marked, secured but ungroomed off-piste runs, with a total length of 20 km, are an absolute must for freeriders. Among the best-known routes are Mont Gelé and the Vallon d’Arbi, which have been skied by the pros on the Freeride World Tour.

An absolute highlight of the Verbier ski area is the 3,300-metre-high peak of Mont-Fort, which offers a 360-degree view of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. From here, a legendary black piste with a 35-degree decline and challenging moguls leads down across the Tortin Glacier into the valley. As well as several top-class ski schools, families and beginners can look forward to beginners’ areas in Les Esserts or Les Moulins, complete with magic carpets. In the La Tzoumaz-Savoleyres and Bruson areas, on the other hand, there are not only sunny slopes but also open forest runs for experts.

Night skiing Verbier

When it comes to night skiing, Verbier takes a different approach. This includes the weekly ski touring evenings in Savoleyres, where every Wednesday evening in winter the route from Verbier or La Tzoumaz up to an altitude of 2,350 metres is open under a starry sky. After the ascent – which covers between 650 and 710 metres in altitude, depending on the starting point – winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy a hearty dinner at the mountain restaurant before heading back down into the valley with headlamps. Classic-style lit pistes for alpine night skiing in Verbier are only available for special events or in selected beginners’ areas, and subject to current snow conditions.

Après ski in Verbier

In Verbier, of course, après ski is also celebrated away from the pistes, in cosy chalets or lively bars that offer an atmosphere that is, in some cases, already legendary. A popular meeting place right by the piste is the “Bar 1936”, where two yurts and live music create a great atmosphere. In the village itself, winter sports enthusiasts traditionally gather at the “Médran Café” after a long day’s skiing and round off the evening with homemade snacks.

Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere, on the other hand, can treat themselves to a cold drink at the “T-Bar” or the “Buvette des Etablons” in La Tzoumaz. Verbier also impresses with its culinary offerings, including highlights such as the “Igloo du Mont-Fort”, where Europe’s highest fondue is served at an altitude of 3,330 metres.

Aside from food and drink, Verbier also offers a range of leisure activities. For example, you can go sledging on a toboggan run that covers a vertical drop of almost 700 metres between Savoleyres and La Tzoumaz. This makes it one of the longest of its kind in French-speaking Switzerland. You can relax in the heated swimming pool in La Tzoumaz, on dog sled rides with huskies, or on romantic winter walks, such as to the Hameau de Clambin. Adrenaline junkies can also hurtle across the glacier at over 100 km/h on the “Mont 4 Zipline”.

Snowpark Verbier: La Chaux

For freestyle skiers and snowboarders, the “La Chaux” snow park in Verbier, at 2,250 m, is the number one destination! The area enjoys constant sunshine, is professionally groomed daily by the resort’s own shapers, and is easily accessible via the “La Chaux Express” and “La Chaux 2” chair lifts. Within the park itself, there are several lines to choose from: ranging from the Small Line with tables and whoops for beginners, right through to the Medium and Large Lines featuring kickers nearly 13 metres high, rails, tubes and boxes that will thrill even the pros.

La Chaux also features a ski cross course with steep-wall turns and undulations. La Tzoumaz-Savoleyres, on the other hand, boasts a 400-metre-long fun slope on the Taillay piste. It’s packed with playful features such as a 10-metre-long snail, a tunnel and a wall ride, and is particularly popular with children. And at the end, chill-out zones in the snow park invite you to watch other riders perform their tricks and enjoy the relaxed freestyle atmosphere in Verbier.
